Bio
After graduating from the Academy of Art, San Francisco in 1988, I moved back to my hometown of Los Angeles. This led to a job co-creating the graphics and cover design for Tom Petty’s ‘Great Wide Open’ tour book. In a creatively energized atmosphere, I produced artwork which was shown regularly in downtown Los Angeles.
I lived in the Midwest for a few years. My artistic direction moved towards the people and rich history of the area. Having already worked on an art series of 'Remarkable Women', my paintings quickly embraced Kansas Women as a sub series of paintings. I found something comforting, inspiring and fascinating about the life stories of these women. Out of incredible circumstances and against so many odds, they paved a way for themselves and others, creating memorable stories. This series and most of my work explores the deeper connection we have to each other.
During 2009, while in Kansas, I began and managed a community Monthly Art Event called Third Thursday, which is in its 15th year. I opened a community Art Gallery during this time, which led to facilitating three major murals in Downtown Hutchinson, Kansas.
My artwork continues to reflect honoring people and stories.
I began the Camisole de Force Series sewing and using a straight jacket as a foundation to explore ideological and physical control. The garment is a base for expression of personal and social stories.
What A Gas! Art and Photographic Series explores socio economic and environmental issues by using a gas mask as the base to express relevant issues.
The Mama Temple, www.themamatemple.org, is one of my latest community collaborations. The Mama Temple brings to light all the experiences of motherhood through Art and Stories. Reconstructing the narrative of what motherhood means to us, is at the core of this multimedia project.
In The Triple Goddess series, I am exploring and revealing the true nature of the feminine archetypes. Each piece, Maiden, Mother, Crone, are made of fabric, paint, mixed media and personal mementos and photos. These works dive into the real and the subconscious of how the divine feminine is perceived by society and ourselves.
Being creative in all areas of my life is a constant inspiration for me. Beginning in my childhood years I sought to express myself in ways that I was comfortable with, in ways that were safe. I could explore my experiences and emotions through writing and creating images. In art school I learned to increase the boundaries of what was visually possible. As an artist I continue to explore my life and society in creative ways that challenge the norm, and provoke thought. I use various materials in my work, depending on the subject matter.. The message often prompts what mediums I use in my artwork.
Thanks for taking time to experience my work.
